As well as songs, you can download and listen to audiobooks and podcasts. It’s also possible to use your iPod shuffle to store data from your computer.

Next, put your iPod shuffle in its dock. When you connect your iPod shuffle to your computer for the first time, iPod Setup Assistant appears on screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to register the iPod shuffle with the computer and to sync it with iTunes.

iTunes on other computers

If you’ve synced your iPod shuffle to iTunes on your computer, and you connect the iPod shuffle to another computer that has iTunes, a message appears. This asks whether you want to sync your iPod shuffle with the new computer’s iTunes library.

  • To retain your existing content on your iPod shuffle, select Cancel
  • To retain your existing content on your iPod shuffle and copy it to the new computer’s iTunes library, select Transfer Purchases

Disconnecting your iPod shuffle from a computer

Never disconnect your iPod shuffle from a computer if you’re in the process of loading files or using the iPod shuffle as an external disc.

You must eject your iPod shuffle first before disconnecting it if:

  • The “Do not disconnect” message appears on iTunes
  • the top status light on your iPod shuffle is flashing orange
  • you are using your iPod shuffle as an external disc

To eject your iPod shuffle:

  • select the Eject button on iTunes or
  • (for PCs) select the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray and then click “iPod shuffle”
  • (for Macs) drag the Desktop’s iPod shuffle icon to the Trash

To disconnect your iPod shuffle, simply remove it from the USB dock.

iPod shuffle Family

iTunes

You can download iTunes free of charge (see http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/). iTunes is the software you need to obtain music from:

  • the iTunes store
  • your CDs
  • hard discs

Once the music, audiobooks and podcasts are on your computer, you can download them to the iPod shuffle by syncing.

Note that iTunes appears automatically each time you plug the iPod shuffle into your computer.

The iTunes store

To buy music and audiobooks from iTunes, you need an Apple account. Select Store>Create Account and follow the on-screen instructions.

To search the iTunes store:

  • select a music genre from the Choose Genre menu
  • select the songs and albums that interest you

Alternatively, select Browse on the main iTunes Store page.

For podcasts, select Podcasts on the main iTunes Store page.

You can also search the iTunes store by using the search facility. Simply enter the name of an album, song, artist, or composer.

To make a purchase, double-click on the song or album. Then select Buy Song, Buy Album, or Buy Book as appropriate.

To download one podcast episode, select Get Episode. To subscribe to a podcast, select Subscribe. You’ll immediately receive the current episode; future episodes will automatically download to your iTunes library when they’re available.

Select the Home button in the top left-hand corner if you want to return to the main iTunes Store page at any time.

  • select Info
  • type in the song’s details
  • select Next
  • choose OK when you’ve finished

  • Select File>New Smart Playlist
  • Establish your rules

Loading your iPod shuffle from iTunes

You can organise the way your music transfers from iTunes to your iPod shuffle.

If you want to restrict autofill to selected items:

  • Plug your iPod shuffle into your computer
  • Select iPod shuffle in iTunes Source
  • Choose a song or item from iPod shuffle
  • Press Delete or Backspace on your keyboard

This action does not remove the item from your iTunes library.

Charging

Your iPod shuffle has a built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery. When fully charged, this battery will give you up to twelve hours of continuous playback.

Charge your iPod shuffle by placing it in the USB dock and connecting the dock to a computer. Keep the computer switched on and not set at standby or sleep mode (although some Macs can charge an iPod shuffle even in sleep mode).

It takes about four hours to full charge the iPod shuffle battery. After about two hours, the battery is approximately 80% charged.

The top status light of your iPod shuffle is orange when your battery is charging. The light becomes green when the battery is fully charged. If the light is not on, try using another USB 2.0 port.

You can download content from your iTunes library to your iPod shuffle when the battery is charging.

If the top status light flashes red continuously, it’s time to recharge your iPod shuffle battery.

Methods of charging

You can charge your iPod shuffle using an iPod USB Power Adaptor that you plug into an electric socket. To buy an adaptor, see http://store.apple.com/uk.
