The Internet

Your iPod touch connects to the Internet by using Wi-Fi technology. You can therefore go online wherever there’s a Wi-Fi network at home, work, or at advertised hotspots. Once the Wi-Fi connection is active, your iPod touch automatically links to the Internet when you begin using a suitable application such as Safari, Mail, Maps, App Store, iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, or YouTube.

To turn on your Wi-Fi

  • Select Settings>Wi-Fi
  • Turn Wi-Fi on

To join a Wi-Fi network

  • Select Settings>Wi-Fi
  • Wait until your iPod touch detects available networks
  • Enter password if necessary (some networks have a lock icon)
  • Tap Join

Once you’ve joined a network, your iPod touch automatically connects when the network’s in range.

iTunes

Collect songs, videos, films, TV shows, audiobooks, and podcasts in your iTunes library. Then sync your iPod touch with iTunes to transfer the library content automatically.

To set iTunes to sync your chosen content to the iPod touch

  • Connect the iPod touch to your computer
  • Choose iPod touch in the iTunes sidebar
  • Using the tabs marked Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Podcasts, choose what you want to place on your iPod touch
  • Select Apply

If you have too many songs for your iPod touch to hold, iTunes offers to make a playlist of selections from your iTunes library.

To set your iPod touch for manual content management

You can manage the items on your iPod touch manually.

  • Connect the iPod touch to your computer
  • Choose iPod touch in the iTunes sidebar
  • Select Summary
  • Select “Manually manage music and videos”
  • Select Apply

To add content to your iPod touch manually

Drag items from your iTunes library to the iPod touch icon in the sidebar. iTunes immediately syncs this content. Deselect “Manually manage music and videos” to remove the manual content from your iPod touch the next time you sync with iTunes.

To remove content from your iPod touch manually

  • In iTunes, select the disclosure triangle on the left of the iPod touch icon (in the sidebar) to display the contents
  • Choose a content area
  • Select the items you wish to remove
  • Press your keyboard’s delete key

This procedure deletes an item from your iPod touch but not from your iTunes library. When you remove an item from iTunes, however, it disappears from your iPod touch during the next sync.

To convert videos for your iPod touch

You don’t need to restrict your iPod touch videos to ones bought on iTunes. For example, you can use videos that you transfer from your hard drive to iTunes. You may sometimes find, however, that when you try to place such a video on your iPod touch, a message appears warning that the video won’t play. If this happens, use the following procedure.

  • In your iTunes library, select the video
  • Select Advanced>“Create iPod or iPhone Version”
  • Transfer the converted video to your iPod touch

Charging

Your iPod touch has a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery. To charge it, connect the iPod touch to your computer with the USB cable. Ensure the computer is on: if the computer is off, or in sleep or standby mode, the battery won’t charge. Check the icon in the top right-hand corner of your iPod touch screen to confirm the battery is charging.

If you’re syncing or using the iPod touch, the battery may charge more slowly. The normal charge time for a low level battery is two hours for 80% capacity, and approximately four hours for a full charge.

If you want to charge your iPod touch away from a computer, use the Apple USB Power Adaptor (available from http://store.apple.com/uk).

Cleaning your iPod touch

Switch off your iPod touch and remove all cables. Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth that’s slightly damp.

Do not use any cleaning fluid or spray.

Do not get moisture in the openings of your iPod touch.
